Robust correlations exist between food preparation skills and improved health and dietary quality. Additionally, physicians who adopt healthy behaviors are more apt to discuss healthy behaviors with their patients. Experts are suggesting that nutritional counseling should include food-oriented education emphasizing skills such as shopping, food storage, and meal planning and preparation. The purpose of this session is to both improve providers’ self-care, and counseling competencies by providing food based nutritional education, and culinary medicine skills and tools. The session includes a short cooking demonstration, providing skills and tools aimed to improve participants’ personal health behavior; and a presentation aimed to 1) introduce the gaps in both medical and patient’s education regarding food, 2) provide tools on how to incorporate Culinary Medicine into lifestyle medicine, primary care, and other specialties practices, and 3) share resources of where to refer patients that are interested in improving their culinary skills.
