Knowledge is power, but it is not powerful enough to instill lasting change. In order to empower our patients to adopt healthy habits for a lifestyle we need a fresh approach to behavior change conversations and new tools for our lifestyle medicine tool box. With a combination of motivational interviewing, self determination theory basics, and health coaching concepts, we can do more than order or advise patients to change, we can negotiate, collaborate, guide and hold our patients accountable for healthy habits. There is an evidence base to support this new way of communicating. In addition, there is also research to support the fact that our habits matter to our patients. Thus, practicing what we preach and prioritizing self care enables and empowers us to be the change agents that we strive to be.
