Changing Communities Through Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change Programs

Intensive therapeutic lifestyle change (ITLC) programs can be used to successfully change the paradigm of an entire community. Cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and cancer cause significant morbidity and mortality in the Wallowa region of Eastern Oregon. In a collaboration between private Lifestyle Medicine physicians and Wallowa Memorial Hospital, a successful local grant request funded pilot ITLC sessions. $40,500 was awarded to provide three separate 18-session (2 month) intensive lifestyle change programs. Each program enrolled 50 participants with a total of 30 hours of instruction. Participant blood sugars dropped an average of 9.5% and LDL cholesterols dropped an average of 13.1%. Average weight loss was 7.8 lbs. The community is now looking at the value of lifestyle differently.
