The AAFP concludes that “group visits can provide an improved quality of care and a higher level of patient and physician satisfaction. Group visits have proven to be an effective way to improve patients’ dietary compliance and intermediate markers for diabetes and coronary artery disease.” Furthermore, AAFP urges that “Group visits are one component of the system changes needed for the new model of care.” Implementation of lifestyle medicine group visits allows a physician or educator to spend 90 minutes with small groups discussing and sharing the necessary details and behavior tools to implement lifestyle strategies like healthy eating, exercise, stress management and sleep hygiene. The model is embraced and promoted by insurers and employers for obvious fiscal benefits of disease reversal. But best of all, group visits help patients attain clinical and social well being while improving the operational and financial health of a physician’s practice.
